5 Reasons Christians Should Get Out and Vote

It’s November 3, and the 2026 midterm election is fully underway. More than 58 million Americans have already voted early in-person or by mail, and millions more are expected to show up today.

According to the Barna research group, a stunning 32 million regular churchgoing Christians did not plan to vote in the 2024 presidential election. Since turnout is always lower in midterm elections, compared to presidential elections, that number will likely be even higher this year.

It’s important for Christians in America to understand the importance of voting and why all Christians nationwide should inform themselves about who they’ll be voting for and what they’ll be voting on.

Here’s five reasons Christians should go vote today.

First, as former President Ronald Reagan said, “The right to vote is the crown jewel of American liberties.”

For many Americans, the right to vote may seem like a fact of life. But that hasn’t always been the case, whether down through history or in other places around the world. Voting is a privilege and responsibility Americans can’t take lightly.

Second, Jesus taught that the second greatest commandment is, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31, ESV). One of the ways we can do that is through voting.

Christians should care about politics because we care about people. Bad and unjust policies harm people. Good and right policies benefit people. For those of us who care about saving preborn babies, protecting girls from harm, defending children, and supporting Christians’ right to live out our faith, voting is one way we can support what is good and true.

As theologian Wayne Grudem writes in his book Voting as a Christian, “Jesus’ command to ‘love your neighbor’ means that I should seek the good of my neighbors in every aspect of society, including government, by seeking to bring about good government and good laws (emphasis in original).”

Third, voting gives us the opportunity to fulfill Jesus’ command to his disciples, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21, ESV).

Voting allows Americans to do our civic duty, thereby rendering to Caesar what is Caesar’s. If we vote for good and just laws, and for righteous candidates who will influence our nation and culture for good, according to our conscience, then we also give God what he is owed.

Fourth, many “political” issues today are moral issues that Christians should have firm convictions about, including:

The sanctity of human life.

The defense of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The protection of religious freedom.

The God-given reality of biological sex.

And children’s right to be raised by their mother and father.

Voting gives us the opportunity to express our opinions and raise our voices on these crucial issues.

Finally, if Christians do not vote, we allow individuals who don’t agree with our morals, values and beliefs to choose our laws and elected officials. That is a surefire way to ensure a society has bad laws and bad government.

Christians are called to be “salt and light” in our culture (Matthew 5:13-16). One way we can do that is through voting. Most polls around the country close at 7 p.m. local time.
