It seems like only yesterday that we were enjoying Memorial Day parades and looking forward to summer. Now here we are: the school runs have returned, and already Labor Day is in the rearview mirror. Furthermore, the general election is fast approaching, and the tension in the country is building.
It is imperative that as Christians, we remind ourselves daily that the Lord God omnipotent reigns (Rev. 19:6)! It doesn’t always seem so, but it is so.
Our team works very hard and does a terrific job of ensuring that the content on the daily program dovetails with our recommended reading. This month is no exception. The program series in Jude leaves us in no doubt that spiritual declension demands a serious commitment to “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” In every generation, we need the spirit of the men of Issachar, who had the God-given “understanding of the times” and knew what to do (1 Chron. 12:32).
This is where Stephen McAlpine’s book titled Futureproof comes into play. He helps us understand our times and shows us how to live for Jesus in a culture that keeps changing. If you’re looking for a book to study with some friends or with high-school or college students, I highly recommend it as an encouragement for sharing Gospel light with those drawn into the darkness of the current culture.
As your young children or grandchildren return to school, they, too, face challenges and will be greatly helped by trusting in Jesus and in the truths of Scripture. To this end, let me encourage you to use the book C Is for Christian. When I worked with Derek Prime, I was struck by the way he used the alphabet for teaching basic doctrine, and in this new release, I have taken a leaf from his book. C Is for Christian presents twenty-six words—one for each letter of the alphabet—that complete the sentence “A Christian is…” The text has been enhanced with beautiful illustrations by Emma Skerratt.
All of this material is purposefully and prayerfully offered to help all of us live without grumbling or disputing, that we may be blameless and innocent, without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom we shine as lights in the world, holding fast the Word of Life (Phil. 2:15–16).
