Jimmy Carter Says the Democrat Party Should Moderate Its Position on Abortion

Former President Jimmy Carter recently told Laura Ingraham that the Democrat Party should moderate its pro-abortion position.

Appearing on Ingraham’s talk show, Carter said, “I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions, and that was one of the problems I had when I was president having to uphold Roe v. Wade, and I did everything I could to minimize the need for abortions.”

“Except for the times when a mother’s life is in danger or when a pregnancy is caused by rape or incest, I would certainly not or never have approved of any abortions,” he noted. “I think if the Democratic Party would adopt that policy, that would be acceptable to a lot of people who are now estranged from our party because of the abortion issue.”

Carter also added that he signed a public letter calling on the Democrat Party to rescind its unqualified support for abortion at the next convention, slated to be held in 2024.

The former president’s comments about his own party serve as a reminder that only recently has the Democrat Party swerved further to the left on abortion.

While running for president in 2008, then-candidate Hillary Clinton said that those who were pro-choice needed to find common ground with those who were pro-life.

During a townhall, one citizen asked Clinton whether she could find common ground with pro-life supporters “with the goal, ultimately, in mind of reducing the decisions for abortion to zero?”

“Yes, yes,” Clinton said. “That is what I have tried to both talk about and reach out about … in talking about abortion being safe, legal and rare, and by rare, I mean rare.”

According to Terrisa Bukovinac, president of Democrats for Life, there are 20 million pro-life Democrats. In an interview with The Daily Citizen, Bukovinac called her party’s current position “totally horrifying.”

In its official 2020 platform, the Democrat Party did not mention a single limitation on abortion that the party supports. It also dropped the word “rare,” from the document, stating only that abortion should be “safe and legal.”

Recent polls suggest that a large majority of Americans want significant restrictions placed upon abortion, including those who call themselves pro-choice.

Now, it’s good to reflect that during Holy Week, when Christians commemorate the Last Supper, the death of Jesus Christ, His burial and His resurrection, we remember that Christ died to forgive our sins, no matter what they are. If you have had an abortion, or pushed someone to have an abortion, Christ died to forgive those sins, too.
