Focus on the Family’s Dr. Sharen Ford to Speak at ‘Equality Act Exposed’ Virtual Rally

Dr. Sharen Ford, Director of Foster Care and Adoption at Focus on the Family, will describe the threat that H.R. 5, the “Equality Act,” poses to faith-based foster care and adoption agencies at a virtual rally, “Equality Act Exposed.”

Family Policy Alliance is hosting the one-hour event on Wednesday morning, February 24, at 10:00 a.m., Eastern Time. The event will focus on the egregious impact of the Equality Act, which would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to federal non-discrimination laws.

The harmful effects include: the threats to privacy and safety in restrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms; the negative implications for women’s sports; the harm to children who will be taught about “gender ideology”; and the assault on religious freedom.

Dr. Ford is a nationally-recognized child welfare consultant who came to Focus on the Family after more than 30 years of working with the Colorado Department of Human Services in the Division of Child Welfare Services. The former president of the National Association of State Adoption Programs, she has previous experience teaching middle school, high school, adult and remedial education courses.

Dr. Ford works to help raise awareness of the need for adoptive families to provide loving and stable homes for the more than 100,000 waiting children in the U.S. foster care system. She also makes post-placement resources available for adoptive families.

If passed, the Equality Act would make it discriminatory for faith-based foster care and adoption agencies to place children with only a loving mother and father, rather than with two parents of the same sex. H.R. 5 specifically mentions adoption and foster care agencies as targets.

As laws privileging “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” have been passed in various states, faith-based adoption and foster care agencies have been forced to abandon their principles – or shut down. Catholic Charities of Boston, San Francisco Catholic Charities, and Catholic Charities in in Illinois, Washington, D.C, and Buffalo, New York have all shut down because they could not partner with state or local governments and maintain their deeply-held religious beliefs.

The Equality Act has no protections for religious freedom. In fact, the Biden administration and LGBT activist groups call safeguards for religious liberty “a license to discriminate.”

In addition to Dr. Ford, confirmed speakers for the virtual rally include:

  • Craig De Roche, President of Family Policy Alliance
  • Charmaine Yoest, Vice President, The Heritage Foundation
  • Joseph Backholm, Senior Fellow, Family Research Council
  • Penny Nance, President of Concerned Women for America
  • Jeanne Mancini, President, March for Life
  • Natasha Chart, Executive Director, Women’s Liberation Front
  • Beth Stelzer, Founder of Save Women’s Sports
  • Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo.

Alliance Defending Freedom is representing three girls from Connecticut in a lawsuit fighting the incursion of boys who think they are girls into girls sports. Christiana Holcomb, legal counsel for the organization, will be speaking at the rally, along with Christy Mitchell, the mother of one of the girls in the case.
