Pro-Life Advocates Arrested for Writing in Chalk ‘Black Preborn Lives Matter’ Outside Planned Parenthood

In Washington D.C., members of Students for Life were arrested for trying to write “Black Preborn Lives Matter” in chalk on the sidewalk outside a Planned Parenthood, despite the fact that “Black Lives Matter” and “Defund the Police” were painted on the streets in the city without reprisal.

Do Americans have the right to paint slogans on the street? It appears so after several cities have allowed activists to paint “Black Lives Matter” in prominent locations, including on 16th Street NW blocks from the White House and right outside the Trump Tower in New York City.

However, the pro-life movement has not been extended the same courtesy.

Students for Life planned a demonstration outside a local Planned Parenthood location with the intent of painting the message “Black Preborn Lives Matter” on the street. They didn’t get the opportunity.

According to the pro-life organization, “After applying and receiving our permit for this event today, after being told by the Metropolitan police that the Mayor has quote ‘opened a Pandora’s box’ by painting public streets, we arrived to SIX police cars threatening to arrest our team and students if they painted, even using the temporary paint we bought that the Police Department specifically requested. When we asked if we could at least use sidewalk chalk to chalk our anti-violence message on the streets, the police threatened to arrest us.”

Two of the members attempting to write the message in chalk were arrested on the spot.

It’s a clear example of how only certain messages matter when it comes to displaying them in public locations. The plight of black women and preborn babies, who are more likely to become the target of abortionists, apparently don’t matter in the nation’s capital.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Abortion Surveillance Report, black women accounted for 38% of the abortions performed in the United States, despite making up only 13% of the population per the U.S. Census. In comparison, Americans who identify as white make up 76% of the population, but only 35% of abortions. It’s a disparity that’s difficult to ignore.

In addition, black women are also more likely to get an abortion later in pregnancy, after the first eight weeks, than white women.

Mark Levin wrote on Twitter, “The new justice—only leftists can paint their slogans on public streets and sidewalks. They can burn, pillage and terrorize. Everyone else faces arrest for their peaceful social justice expressions. How dare they paint on public sidewalks when the mayor paints on public streets. Meanwhile, convicted criminals are being released from prisons supposedly due to the virus. Sick and getting sicker.”

Though the city can still plead its case, it appears like the issue had little to do with where the Students for Life members were writing and everything to do with what they were writing. Black lives in the womb are apparently not afforded the same protection as those outside of it.

Students for Life plans on suing the city of Washington D.C. for violating their “First Amendment rights to free speech and expression.”
