First Lady Melania Trump: Every Child Deserves a Family and a Future

It was back on November 13, 2025, when President Trump signed the “Fostering the Future for American Children and Families” executive order directing the federal government to forge partnerships with private groups to help better serve children and parents in the foster care system.

Nine months later, that vision has been realized and was recognized at the White House on Thursday. With President Trump sitting in the front row, First Lady Melania Trump announced that IndyCar and the Fox Corporation were donating $2 million designated for scholarships at Indiana and Purdue Universities for young people in foster care.

“Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care,” Mrs. Trump shared. “Their capability is no less remarkable. ‘Fostering the Future’ elevates America’s youth based on merit and talent, lifting them beyond economic circumstance and every other condition that may limit opportunity.”

“Fostering the Future” is the First Lady’s signature initiative designed to not just serve children within the foster care system but also help those transitioning out of it.

Tragically, upwards of 20,000 young people age out of the system each year without ever having established themselves with a permanent family.

Thursday’s event in the Rose Garden was designed to coincide with the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a historic car race set to take place this weekend on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. One of the Indy cars set to be in the race was on display at the White House and featured the “Fostering the Future” slogan.

Mrs. Trump’s efforts address one of the more heartbreaking challenges facing children in the foster care system. Unless they’re adopted and welcomed into a permanent family, many young adults do not have the psychological and emotional support, counsel, and financial means to pursue college or vocational training.

The arrangement announced yesterday with Indiana and Purdue adds to the network of schools Mrs. Trump and her team have worked with to help make higher education possible for those in foster care. There are now 26 schools working with the special initiative, including the Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin, Arizona State University, University of Georgia, University of Texas, Louisiana State University, University of Alabama, and the University of Florida.

“Our mission is simple yet transformational,” said Mrs. Trump. “Provide every young person from the foster care community the chance to earn a college education, launch a meaningful career, and achieve lasting financial independence.”

Nearly 400,000 children are currently in foster care here in the United States.

“Fostering the Future is more than an educational initiative,” Mrs. Trump told those gathered.

She continued:

It is a generational investment in America’s talent pipeline. Every student who graduates strengthens our workforce, accelerates innovation, expands economic opportunity, and reduces long-term dependence on government assistance. The return on this investment is measured not only in lives changed for the better, but in stronger communities, a more competitive nation, and a future powered by American ingenuity.

Focus on the Family’s “Wait No More” program has long sought to encourage Christian families to prayerfully consider how the Lord might use them to serve children who have been tragically separated from their mothers and fathers. The redemptive work of this ministry has resulted in thousands of children finding forever homes.

Focus’ president Jim Daly, who spent time in foster care, has suggested, “Every believer has a role to play in foster care.”  He then added, “We’re not all called to do the same thing or to carry the same load, of course, but we’re all capable of doing something. The ultimate goal, as I see it, is for every believer to feel empowered with a sense of direction for how God wishes to use us.”

In addition to fostering and adopting, that “something” can include providing respite care, serving in an agency, and committing to pray for those navigating this difficult journey.

We’re grateful for the White House’s unwavering and tireless commitment to serving some of our nation’s most vulnerable children.
