Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed a radical abortion bill into law, reaffirming that abortion is legal in the state and that every woman has a “fundamental right” to kill their preborn child up until the moment of birth.
The bill, the Protect Reproductive Options Act (PRO Act or HF 1), states:
Every individual has a fundamental right to make autonomous decisions about the individual’s own reproductive health, including the fundamental right to use or refuse reproductive health care.
Every individual who becomes pregnant has a fundamental right to continue to pregnancy and give birth, or obtain an abortion, and to make autonomous decisions about how to exercise this fundamental right.
The Act makes Minnesota the first state to codify abortion via legislation since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022.
In a statement after signing the bill into law on January 31, Gov. Walz said the bill delivers on his promise to ensure “reproductive freedom.”
“This legislation will ensure Minnesotans have access to reproductive health care for generations to come. Here in Minnesota, your access to reproductive health care and your freedom to make your own health care decisions are preserved and protected,” the governor said.
Of course, the governor didn’t mention the generations of young Americans who will never be born due to Minnesota’s lenient abortion laws and the PRO Act.
The Minnesota Family Council is an allied organization of Focus on the Family. The group warned that in addition to ensuring abortion will remain legal up until the moment of birth, the PRO Act:
Forces all Minnesotans to pay for all abortion services through Medical Assistance.
Repeals the law protecting children born during abortion surgery, thereby legalizing infanticide.
Repeals statutes which ensure that pregnant women give informed consent prior to abortion.
Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan called the bill “truly historic” after Gov. Walz signed it.
“This legislation ensures all Minnesotans, including our Black, Native, and LGBTQ+ neighbors, have the freedom to make their own health care decisions about their own bodies,” she added.
In a statement to the Daily Citizen, Minnesota Family Council CEO John Helmberger said:
The abortion legislation signed by Minnesota’s Governor yesterday is one of the most extreme abortion bills ever considered in any American state, ranking with outliers on the world stage like North Korea and Communist China.
As we at Minnesota Family Council grieve that bloody precedent and work to undo it, I remain hopeful because God is just. The day will come when this legislation and others like it are consigned to the ash heap of history, and viewed with as much abhorrence as the Dred Scott slavery decision is today. Both depend on dehumanizing an entire class of human beings. We all suffer for that. When any life is devalued, all life is.
In addition, after Gov. Walz signed the bill, Bishop Robert Barron, the Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota, called the bill the “most radical abortion law in the country.”
“This strikes me as the worst kind of barbarism,” the bishop added. “This is so beyond the pale, and we’ve so lost our way on this issue.”
