President Trump tweeted on Monday afternoon that he will be leaving Walter Reed Medical Center at 6:30PM EST on Monday evening.
“I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 PM,” the president tweeted. “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”
In a press briefing Monday afternoon, the president’s medical team briefed the American people and touted the president’s continued progress in his fight against the coronavirus.
“The president has continued to improve,” the president’s physician Dr. Sean P. Conley said. “He’s met or exceeded all standard hospital discharge criteria. He’ll receive another dose of Remdesivir here today, and then we plan to get him home. It has been more than 72 hours since his last fever. Oxygen levels… are all normal.”
“Though he may not entirely be out of the woods yet, the team and I agree that all our evaluations, and most importantly, his clinical status, support the president’s safe return home where he’ll be surrounded by world class medical care 24/7,” he added.
Taking questions from the press, one reporter asked about the seven to 10-day window with which COVID-19 usually has its most severe effects. “I don’t think we’re there yet, so do you have concerns about potentially worsening or reversal and what are your plans for addressing that if it were to happen?” the reported asked.
“We all remain cautiously optimistic and on guard,” Dr. Conley said. “We’re in a bit of uncharted territory when it comes to a patient that received the therapies he has so early in the course. So, we’re looking to this weekend, if we can get through to Monday with him remaining the same or improving… then we will all take that final deep sigh of relief.”
Addressing a question from a reporter on the president’s “mental status” and whether he has any “neurological symptoms,” Dr. Conley said, “None. No, I think you have seen the videos and now the tweets and you’ll see him shortly… he’s back.”
President Trump was admitted to Walter Reed on Friday afternoon after being diagnosed with COVID-19 on Thursday night. Throughout the weekend, he provided several video updates explaining to the American people how he was doing.
In a video posted to Twitter on Saturday evening, the president said, “I just want to be so thankful for all of the support I’ve seen whether it’s on television or reading about it. I most of all appreciate what has been said by the American people… I won’t forget it; I promise you that.”
