Abi Carter, who just won American Idol season 22, recently gave an interview claiming her singing career first began in her mother’s womb.
Carter – who was named the newest American Idol on Sunday, May 19 – was interviewed by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark after her victory.
She said that when her mom went in for an ultrasound, she started singing and “humming” as an unborn child in the womb.

Now, since vocalizing requires air – which is not present in utero – it’s not clear what sound Andrea’s (Abi Carter’s mother) doctors would have been hearing.
According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, a pro-life research organization, a preborn baby’s vocal cord development begins remarkable early – at 13 weeks’ gestation. Additionally, “later in the pregnancy researchers will even see the vocal cords vibrate as the fetus practices crying in the womb.” By week 20, the preborn baby’s vocal cords “move in a similar pattern to that seen during crying after birth.”
By week 22, a preborn baby can respond to sounds and move “after hearing a loud, low-pitched sound, such as her father’s voice.”
Here’s the truth: Abi Carter’s singing career did begin in the womb because she was the exact same person in the womb as she now is outside of the womb. And that’s true for all of us.
One’s size, level of development, environment, and degree of dependence (SLED) does not determine whether they are human, or what value they have as a person.
A new human being – who has infinite value and worth because they are made in the image of God – is formed at the moment of fertilization, when all the unique genetic information needed to form an adult is present. Just shortly after conception, a preborn baby’s heart begins beating – generally around six weeks’ gestation.
Sometimes, pro-abortion activists argue that human life doesn’t begin until birth – they contend that a preborn baby is just a potential human life until it is born.
Of course, that’s not true – it’s a medical and scientific fact that life begins at conception.
But even if this fact were not true, shouldn’t we still treat potential human lives with the utmost dignity and respect?
Consider this thought experiment: Wouldn’t you treat a potential $1 million just as carefully as you would an actual $1 million? Of course you would! The same idea can apply to human life.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court declared abortion legal nationwide in Roe v. Wade in 1973, more than 63 million preborn babies have been killed by abortion. That’s a staggering number that is hard to fathom.
Consider how many singers, scientists, musicians, artists, pastors, preachers, and problem solvers are not alive today because of abortion. It’s a truly heartbreaking thought.
When Carter first auditioned for American Idol, her performace brought the judges to their feet in a standing ovation. Judge Luke Bryan presciently remarked, “That may be the winner of American Idol right there.”
The same could be said of each preborn baby.
For each child in the womb, only God knows what their talents will be, what gifts they have, and what abilities they can share with the world – if only they are given a chance to live.
For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them (Psalm 139:13-16, ESV).
