Comedian, social commentator and late-night talk-show host Bill Maher has long wandered off the reservation of prescribed liberal talking points, regularly calling his crowd to task for being all manner of just-not-thinking-things-through adequately enough. (Two infamous examples: Here on the unreasonableness of “LGBT” and here on the brutal absolutism of current pro-Palestinian politics.)
But now Maher has outdone himself on the very important issue of abortion.
On April 12, 2024, the host broached the topic with his two guests, Piers Morgan and Gillian Tett, provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and said what no one on the Left is allowed to admit out loud: Abortion is the killing of a human being.
Maher was talking about the difficulty Republican politicians are finding themselves in this election season with abortion now returned state jurisdiction with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He declared that he can now respect the position of pro-lifers who insist on no accommodations for abortion because they believe every abortion stops an innocent and beating human heart.
Without the slightest reservation, Maher pronounced…
I can respect the absolutist position, I really can. I scold the Left when they say, “Oh, you know what? They [pro-lifers] just hate women.”
People who aren’t pro-choice, they don’t hate women. They just made that up.
They [pro-lifers] think its murder, and … it kinda is. I’m just ok with that. I am.
I mean there are 8 billion people in the world. I’m sorry, we won’t miss you.

Michael Knowles of the Daily Wire, reacting to Maher’s statement on his own show, said “Two cheers for Bill Maher. Not three cheers because what he’s saying is evil. But two cheers because what he is saying is honest. It’s a lot more honest than what the Democrats are saying.”
Pro-lifers must stand by our convictions and be consistent with science. Life begins at fertilization. It doesn’t start when the mother, father, or anyone else falls in the love with the new baby. It doesn’t start at some magic point during pregnancy, say eight, 12, 20 or 36 weeks. It certainly doesn’t start when so-called “pro-choice” advocates declare the baby worth protecting. It doesn’t start after birth, the point nearly every pro-abortion politician and many activists unapologetically and radically advocate for.
Every unborn child is you and me. We are those children. The only things that changed between you now and that newly fertilized you then was time, nutrition and maturity. Beyond conception, there was no other magic moment that made you the you that you are now. Every abortion, if it accomplishes its goal, ends that glorious process. That is what abortion is, plain and simple. Every abortion is a tragedy and failure of human compassion.
Celebrated feminist Naomi Wolf famously made a similar argument in October 1995 in the pages of The New Republic. Entitled “Our Bodies, Our Souls,” Wolf said to the leaders in the pro-abortion movement, “we need to contextualize the fight to defend abortion rights within a moral framework that admits that the death of a fetus is a real death; that there are degrees of culpability, judgement and responsibility involved in the decision to abort a pregnancy.” She ends her long essay with these somber and tragic words,
In that world we might well describe the unborn and the never-to-be-born with the honest words of life.
And in that world, passionate feminists might well hold candlelight vigils at abortion clinics, standing shoulder to shoulder with the doctors who work there, commemorating and saying goodbye to the dead.
That world is not likely to ever be. Pro-abortion advocates dare not admit what is plain to both Wolf and Maher. They can offer no apology for any abortion.
The artificially sober Clintonian ideal of abortion being “legal, safe and rare” has given way to the call for activists to proudly “Shout Your Abortion” as a way to defend Planned Parenthood.
At least two voices on the Left are being honest about what abortion does to the greatest hope and future of humanity.
It ends it, one life at a time.
