Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said recently that he is willing to sign a Heartbeat Bill into law. Similar bills that have been passed in other states generally prohibit abortions after six weeks gestation.
During a press conference on Thursday, a reporter asked Gov. DeSantis whether he would “take the lead” on enacting a Heartbeat Bill into law, LifeNews reports.
“I’m willing to sign great life legislation,” the governor responded. “That’s what I’ve always said I would do.”
He said that when it comes to abortion, it’s not only the life of the mother that should be taken into consideration. “Another life is at stake,” the governor said.
“At the end of the day, government was instituted for certain reasons. To protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” Gov. DeSantis added.
Gov. DeSantis is a member of the Roman Catholic Church which teaches that “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2270).
Earlier this year, the Florida legislature passed a 15-week abortion ban, which Gov. DeSantis signed into law.
And yet, Florida has not only taken action to protect preborn babies. It has also taken steps to promote life outside of the womb as well.
In April 2022, Gov. DeSantis signed a bill into law providing $44 million to promote foster care and adoption in the Sunshine State.
And in April of this year, the governor signed into law a bill which provides $70 million to support fatherhood by providing funds for “education programs, mentorship programs and one-on-one support to encourage responsible and involved fatherhood.”
The fatherhood bill was approved in a bipartisan manner in both chambers of the legislature, sailing through on a 117-0 vote in the House and a 38-0 vote in the Senate.
In the 2022 Florida Gubernatorial Election, Gov. DeSantis bested his Democrat opponent Charlie Crist by 20%, winning the perennial swing state by a historically massive margin.
Additionally, Republicans won a supermajority in both houses of the Florida legislature in November. According to Politico, “Democrats, who now have superminority status in the House and Senate, have no ability to stop Republican lawmakers from restricting abortions in the state.”
It’s clear that Florida voters have responded well to Gov. DeSantis bold leadership. Let’s pray the Florida state legislature will soon pass a Heartbeat Bill into law protecting even more preborn babies from abortion.
