Amazon Removes Christian Philosopher’s Book About Transgender Ideology

Tech behemoth Amazon struck another blow for transgender ideology this week by removing a Christian philosopher’s book on how to respond to the “transgender moment.”

The book, When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment, was written in 2018 by Dr. Ryan T. Anderson who serves as the president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center and is the former William E. Simon senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation.

Amazon pulled the book from its online website, removing the physical paper copy from its shelves along with the Kindle and Audible versions.

It’s unclear whether those who have already purchased the Kindle and Audible versions are still able to access the book.

In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, Dr. Anderson said, “I hope you’ve already bought your copy, cause Amazon just removed my book When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment from their cyber shelves…. my other four books are still available (for now).”

Replying to a comment on his tweet, Dr. Anderson said that Amazon did not give him any notice prior to removing the book and has still not said anything on its decision. “No notification to me. I found out when someone trying to buy it noted it was gone,” he wrote.

According to the publisher’s description of the book, it “exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often-sad reality of living with gender dysphoria.” Additionally, the book “gives a voice to people who tried to ‘transition’ by changing their bodies and found themselves no better off.”

When Harry Became Sally reaches the conclusion that for transgender individuals, “the most beneficial therapies focus on helping people accept themselves and live in harmony with their bodies. This understanding is vital for parents with children in schools where counselors may steer a child toward transitioning behind their backs.”

When the book was first released, it earned rave reviews and shot up to The Washington Post’s DC paperback nonfiction bestsellers list earning the third slot. For a while, the book also held first place under Amazon’s “New Releases in Natural Law” category.

Currently, a search for When Harry Became Sally on Amazon brings up 20 search results, none of which are for the book.

However, the search does bring up the book Let Harry Become Sally: Responding to the Anti-Transgender Moment which argues in favor of so-called sex-reassignment surgery for transgender individuals. For every purchase, fifty cents is donated to the National Center for Transgender Equality.

So, Amazon will sell a book that favors harmful and anti-scientific sex-reassignment surgery, but not one that warns of the serious consequences of the procedure.

Additionally, as others have pointed out, Amazon is still selling Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler on its website.

For Amazon, it is A-OK to sell a book authored by a genocidal mass murderer, but not a thoroughly researched, scholarly work by a reputable philosopher on an important issue of our time. It’s also a topic that many families are looking for resources on, which Focus on the Family provides for free here.

The Daily Citizen reached out to Amazon with a request for comment for this article but did not receive a response.

This is not the first time Amazon has banned a book on LGBT issues.

The Daily Citizen reported in 2019 that Amazon had removed “almost a dozen books that offered readers healing and change from unwanted homosexuality” from its shelves.

For interested readers, When Harry Became Sally is still available from Barnes and Noble, Encounter Books and Ignatius Press.

Amazon’s decision to ban a book can be catastrophic for its sales since the e-commerce giant generally captures about 50% or more print book sales, and more than 75% of ebook sales.
