Kentucky’s Democrat Governor Allows Born-Alive Bill to Become Law

In a surprising decision, Kentucky’s Democrat governor Andy Beshear has allowed the state’s born-alive bill to become law. This bill would protect babies born-alive after a failed abortion attempt.

Passed by the House and Senate, the bill was expected to receive a veto like the six others that arrived on his desk last week. Instead, Gov. Beshear declined when it came to the born-alive bill. According to Kentucky law, after 10 days without a signature or a veto, the bill has become law.

Previously, Beshear had vetoed a similar piece of legislation that arrived on his desk last year. His decision not to a pursue a veto here has been applauded by pro-life supporters.

Now babies in the state will be protected if they are born-alive during the abortion procedure.

It may be difficult for some to believe, but babies have been born alive after an abortion attempt failed. This is most notably the case in later second trimester abortions, when essentially the mother gives birth to the child. In this procedure, the abortionist is supposed to kill the baby first through an injection of digitoxin to the heart before the labor process begins.

But this isn’t always effective.

Sometimes the doctor misses, or, in the case of abortion survivor Claire Culwell, her twin was aborted while she survived. As the result of the abortion, she suffers some health difficulties to this day.

The usual standard within the abortion industry is to offer only comfort care to the child, allowing him or her to die without intervening medically and offering life-saving care. In more disturbing cases, the baby is left in medical waste, as in the case of Melissa Ohden.

The law requires that a physician “‘takes all medically appropriate and reasonable steps to preserve the life and health of a born-alive infant.’ It also requires that medical providers give a ‘born-alive infant’ any nourishment, medical care, medical treatment and surgical care that is medically appropriate.”

Of course, the abortion industry objects.

“It is an inflammatory law that was motivated purely by politics and has no basis in the real-life practice of medicine,” ACLU of Kentucky spokesman Samuel Crankshaw said.

Perhaps the ACLU should take a closer look at the case of Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who, through his sheer incompetence and that of his staff, had babies routinely born alive in his clinic. When that happened, he would “snip” the back of their necks, killing living, breathing babies.

Gosnell was eventually convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of babies born alive at his clinic, involuntary manslaughter for the death of a female patient and multiple other felony convictions, including performing illegal late-term abortions.

Babies are born alive after late-term abortion attempts, there is no doubt. After all, abortionists are not well-known for their medical acumen, but as supposed health care practitioners more dedicated to ending lives than to saving them.
