How Do We Protect Ourselves from the Evil One?

The Christian life is a constant battle against fleshly desires, worldly temptations, and spiritual assaults. Satan is a real force and a real enemy who seeks to turn us from God and destroy us through sin. The apostle Peter put it like this: “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

As with soldiers heading into combat, it’s vitally important that we prepare ourselves daily with the necessary protective gear and weapons. But how can we, as humans, withstand the powerful attacks from unseen spiritual forces?

In Ephesians 6:10–11, Paul exhorts Christians to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

The book The Whole Armor of God: How Christ’s Victory Strengthens Us for Spiritual Warfare unpacks the elements of essential armor listed by Paul in Ephesians 6:13–18. Each chapter describes a unique article of God’s armor—the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, Gospel boots, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. You’ll learn what each component represents and how to “put it on” for spiritual protection. More importantly, you’ll discover how Jesus has already successfully utilized each piece of armor and how His victory over death assures every believer’s victory over evil.

It’s not enough simply to put on God’s armor, though; we also need to stay in communication with Him. That’s why prayer is the focus of the closing chapter of The Whole Armor of God. You’ll learn how persistent, Spirit-led prayer will maximize your armor’s effectiveness and deepen your intimacy with the Lord.

Application questions at the end of each chapter will help you personalize the lessons and stimulate deeper discussion. This makes The Whole Armor of God perfect for personal, family, or group Bible studies.
