A recent poll has found that a majority of Americans believe it is morally wrong for someone to change their gender. The poll also revealed interesting findings on a wide variety of other controversial topics.
According to the poll conducted by Gallup, 51% of Americans say that it is morally wrong for a person to change their gender. However, 46% say that it is morally acceptable for someone to do so.
This was the first time Gallup has polled Americans on the topic. The fact that one of the nation’s most premier polling companies is just now beginning to conduct surveys on the morality of transgenderism demonstrates how new the issue is to our political discourse.
The poll was conducted from May 3 – 18, 2021 and surveyed 1,015 adults age 18 and older.
The findings indicate that the battle over transgender ideology is still waging, despite the fact that many of America’s institutions are pushing the view that someone can change their gender. Universities, media outlets, government authorities, athletic committees and powerful corporations have allied to promote this radical gender theory.
The poll also found that a wide majority of Americans see other controversial activities as morally acceptable. These include:
90% of Americans view birth control as morally acceptable compared to just 7% who find it unacceptable.
79% see divorce as morally acceptable while 17% don’t.
73% approve of sex between an unmarried man and woman.
69% say gay or lesbian relations are morally acceptable.
67% view having a baby outside of marriage as morally acceptable.
54% favor doctor-assisted suicide compared to 43% who don’t.
47% of Americans believe abortion is morally acceptable compared to 46% who believe it is not.
Additionally, the poll found that Americans see the following activities as morally unacceptable:
58% believe pornography is morally unacceptable.
77% see suicide as morally unacceptable.
86% disapprove of cloning humans.
89% disfavor married men and women having an affair.
According to Gallup, “The percentages who say three of the issues – abortion, divorce and gay or lesbian relations – are morally acceptable are the highest recorded by Gallup, all by two percentage points.”
“Generally speaking, Americans’ attitudes have become more morally permissive on most of these issues over the past two decades,” the pollsters concluded.
Additionally, Gallup noted that over the next few years, we could see the public’s view on the morality of changing one’s gender shift, similar to how most American’s views on the morality of gay and lesbian relations shifted over the past two decades.
“The new addition to the list, changing one’s gender, is nearly as divisive as abortion, which has typically been the most contentious issue,” Gallup noted. “It remains to be seen whether the public’s views about changing one’s gender will evolve in the way that their opinions of gays and lesbians did, or if they stay as polarized as abortion.”
The Daily Citizen reported earlier this month on a separate poll from Gallup which found that 70% of Americans now approve of the legalization of same-sex marriage.
Between the 25 years that took place between 1996 and 2021, the number of Americans who supported the legalization of same-sex marriage skyrocketed from 27% to 70%.

As the culture continues to shift away from its Christian roots, it will become increasingly important for Christians to be well informed about what Scripture teaches and how we can respond with charity to those who disagree with us.
For starters, check out this week’s Focus on the Family broadcast. It features guest Greg Koukl who offers advice and specific tactics on how Christians can engage in faith-building conversations with others.
“In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).
