Ohio Governor Signs ‘Bathroom Bill’ Into Law Protecting Women’s Spaces

On Wednesday, November 27, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill into law protecting and preserving women’s and men’s single-sex spaces.

The bill (SB 104) is also known as the “Bathroom Bill” or the “Protect All Students Act.” It ensures students in K-12 schools and universities have access to single-sex bathrooms and locker rooms. It also requires overnight accommodations in any school-sponsored event be separated for males and females.

The Ohio House of Representatives approved SB 104 on June 26 by a vote margin of 60-31. The state Senate subsequently passed the bill on November 13 in a 24-7 vote. It will take effect 90 days after the governor signed the bill.

Ohio state Sen. Jerry Cirino, the bill’s sponsor, said SB 104 “revolves around safety, security, and I think, common sense,” adding,

It protects our children and grandchildren in private spaces where they are most vulnerable.

Predictably, far-left groups like the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio campaigned against the bill, designating it an “anti-trans bathroom bill” and a part of the Ohio General Assembly’s “continuous attacks against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.”

The ACLU of Ohio even had the audacity to call the bill a “cruel invasion of students’ rights to privacy” that would “create unsafe environments for trans and gender-nonfirming [sic] individuals of all ages.”

To be clear, the bill does no such thing. It simply acknowledges biological reality – that male and female are objective realities – and thereby protects girls and women from males who would wish to enter their private spaces. It’s that’s simple.

The Center for Christian Virtue is a Focus on the Family-allied organization based in Ohio. CCV President Aaron Baer issued a statement lauding the bill’s approval:

Common sense is on a winning streak in America today. No student should be forced to go into the bathroom or locker room with a student of the opposite sex, and Ohio’s kids are better protected now because of Governor DeWine’s decision to sign this bill.

Ohioans are rejecting the radical agenda of groups like the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Equality Ohio. Their political tactics have lost at the ballot box and are losing at the General Assembly. It’s unbelievable to think these well-funded leftist organizations would think it’s okay to force girls to bunk with boys on overnight trips. But with SB 104 law in Ohio, this insane agenda ends in Ohio.

Baer added that it “takes courage and leadership to withstand the constant attacks from the left when you’re trying to protect children.”

He’s exactly correct. We applaud the courage and conviction of the Ohio legislature and Gov. DeWine, and we thank them for standing up for biological reality and for the rights of women and children.

We hope and pray more states will follow Ohio’s lead.
