Andrea Bocelli, the 65-year-old Italian tenor, blesses the world with his ballads. He’s here to do so because his mom courageously refused to abort him.
Bocelli has told the story of a young pregnant woman hospitalized due to appendicitis.
“The doctors had to apply some ice on her stomach and when the treatments ended the doctors suggested that she abort the child,” Bocelli shares. “They told her it was the best solution because the baby would be born with some disability.”
“But the young brave wife decided not to abort, and the child was born,” he says, adding,
That woman was my mother, and I was the child.
Maybe I’m partisan, but I can say that it was the right choice.
Bocelli was born with congenital glaucoma but became completely blind at age 12 from a brain hemorrhage resulting from a football accident.
He has recorded 15 solo studio albums, three greatest hits albums, nine complete operas and sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Anyone who has listened to and been blessed by Bocelli’s resonant voice can be thankful for his mother’s – Edi Bocelli’s – courageous decision not to abort her son. The world would be a far poorer place if she had.
Canadian singer Celine Dion once remarked, “If God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.”

As Christians, we also know no person’s worth is derived from what they’re able to bring to the world or accomplish in this life.
Every person has infinite worth because they are created in the very image of God – the imago dei.
While Dion’s statement may not be theologically accurate, it is true that Andrea Bocelli’s rich singing voice is a gift from God. So is his life. So is every human life.
