The battle for the U.S. Senate draws to a close this evening as Georgia voters choose between four candidates for two U.S. Senate seats by heading to the polls, which close at 7PM EST today. A record 3 million voters have already cast their ballots before the polls opened on Tuesday morning.
Both parties know the importance of the two runoff elections, as evidenced by the astonishing amount of money that has poured into the state.
Both Democrat challengers, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, have raised over $100 million dollars each for their campaigns, according to the last financial reports filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on December 14. Incumbent Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue have each raised slightly under the $100 million mark as of the filing deadline.
Every candidate is sure to have raised millions of dollars more in the three weeks since the last reports were filed.
The two runoff elections are being held since no candidate in either of Georgia’s two Senate races received over 50% of the vote in the general election on November 3, 2020. By Georgia law, this triggers a runoff election between the top two candidates in each race.
The U.S. Senate currently has 50 Republicans and 48 Democrats. If Democrats win both Georgia seats, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris will break ties in the Senate for at least the next two years, giving Democrats control of a unified government.
If that happens, everything from ending the filibuster to packing the U.S. Supreme Court could be on the table.
However, if Republicans win at least one of the seats, they will provide a significant check on Biden Administration until at least the midterm elections in 2022.
The Daily Citizen is on the ground in Georgia to cover the elections and brought you live coverage of President Trump’s rally at the Dalton Regional Airport in Georgia on Monday evening. The president appeared at the rural airport to boost support for Senators Loeffler and Perdue.
“Tomorrow each of you is going to vote in one of the most important runoff elections in the history of our country,” President Trump said at the rally. “Our country is depending on you. The whole world is watching the people of Georgia tomorrow.”
