California Bill Would Fund ‘Transgender’ Hormones and Surgeries

A California bill to fund health-care services – including puberty blockers, opposite-sex hormones and surgeries – for “transgender, non-conforming or intersex” people is scheduled to be voted on by the state’s Senate Health Committee on Monday, August 10.

AB 2218 was thought to be dead, as California was facing a $56 billion deficit, and legislators were told to “evaluate and prioritize bills based on relevance to the current crisis our state and nation faces.” That crisis includes the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn after many states locked down businesses.

Now, after pressure from LGBT activists and their allies, the bill has been revived, reports the California Family Council (CFC), a Focus on the Family-affiliated state policy group.

Greg Burt is CFC’s Director of Capitol Engagement. He writes, “State Senators Toni Atkins and Richard Pan, under pressure from transgender activists, scheduled a new vote to fund sterilizing transgender procedures, despite previously announcing Saturday’s Senate Health Committee was the last hearing of the year.”

As Burt says, “transgender procedures,” such as puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries, are known to have serious mental and physical health risks, including permanent sterility. Other risks include mood disorders, seizures, cognitive impairment, heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, blood clots and cancers, reports the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds).

The group reports that “physically healthy transgender-believing girls are being given double mastectomies at 13 and hysterectomies at 16, while their male counterparts are referred for surgical castration and penectomies at 16 and 17, respectively.” AB 2218 includes provisions for funding such “gender-affirming health care services.”

The bill comes up for consideration just as a major study, which supposedly showed that “gender-affirming” treatments reduce some mental health issues for those with sexual-identity issues, was shown to have major flaws in methodology and interpretation of data. In fact, the study showed the exact opposite – that hormones and surgery do not lead to a reduction in mental health treatment.

The legislation is also being considered right after the release of an important book, Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, by journalist Abigail Shrier. The book documents the huge increase in teen and young adult females with sexual identity confusion. These young ladies are taking puberty blockers and male hormones, and having surgeries to make them appear like men, in record numbers.

Shrier documents how these young women are influenced to believe they are “transgender” or “gender nonconforming” by their peers, by their own struggles with identity and mental health issues, and by social media. Gender clinics have proliferated across the country, offering puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries to confused young women. Planned Parenthood, Kaiser Permanente and Mayo Clinics also dispense testosterone to teen girls and women.

In addition to all these factors that should give the California Assembly pause, the United Kingdom is backing away from treating confused teen and young adult women with drugs, hormones and surgery. The sharp spike in young women identifying as transgender and the damage from drugs, hormones and surgeries is causing the UK health-care system to re-evaluate their transgender medical practices.

Despite budget shortfalls, medical evidence, and testimonies from former transgender-identified individuals, California is forging ahead with this proposed legislation. AB 2118 has passed the House and is scheduled for consideration in the Senate Health Committee on Monday, August 10.
