Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is just 43 years old, but he’s accomplished more in just a few decades than most do in entire lifetimes.
DeSantis is the 46th Governor of Florida, after being elected to his first term as governor in 2018. He is a Harvard Law graduate and earned a commission in the U.S. Navy as a JAG officer. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service and the Iraq Campaign Medal. He also served as a federal prosecutor and was elected to Congress in 2012.
Ron and his wife, Casey, have three children.
Focus President Jim Daly recently sat down with Gov. DeSantis to interview him for the Focus on the Family Broadcast.
The interview aired on June 23rd and touched on a myriad of topics, including the importance of intact two-parent families, the need to defend preborn children, protecting elementary school children from sexual and gender ideology, and the integrity of women’s sports.
The interview also touches on the importance of free speech and the tyranny of Big Tech giants.
Gov. DeSantis spoke to the importance of Florida’s HB5, which he signed into law earlier this year prohibiting abortion in the state after a preborn child is 15 weeks old.
“This is a child that deserves protection,” Gov. DeSantis said. “You have a beating, [the baby] is capable of feeling pain. When they do these abortions, particularly at that stage, I mean, they’re literally dismembering the unborn child. So it’s really horrific.”
The governor noted that the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion nationwide in Roe v. Wade was not grounded in the text or history of the U.S. Constitution.
He also said that Florida has since been sued in the state’s court system over the law, but he believes the law will ultimately prevail.
“It will certainly save lives, but I also think it’s important as an expression of our values, that every one of these kids count,” DeSantis added.
Daly asked the governor about Florida’s law cracking down on big tech companies and mentioned that the Daily Citizen was banned from Twitter.
“This is very Orwellian. They’re basically asking us to be complicit in lies,” the governor said.
“There’s much more discourse that’s happening on these platforms than what would happen in the actual town square nowadays. And so we just have to recognize that reality, but the notion that conservatives should just do nothing about this, I think that’s gonna lead to us just getting steamrolled by very, very powerful companies. These tech companies exercise more authority over American life than the monopolies of the early 20th century that were broken up.”
Daly also asked Gov. DeSantis, in midst of difficult times and depressing news, where he finds hope.
“Well I think the more we have problems, the more we have a lot of deceit, uh, circling around the culture and dominating the culture, it makes truth that much more powerful. Because people are hungry for it,” he replied.
“If you’re speaking the truth, and you’re willing to back up your words with actions and you will stand and fight for them, there’s a huge amount of people in Florida, and I think around the country that will have your back.”
