LA Chargers’ J.K. Dobbins Scores Game-Winning Touchdown: ‘I Want to Thank Jesus’

Los Angeles Chargers’ running back J.K. Dobbins scored the game-winning touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

With just 26 seconds left to go, the game was tied, and the Chargers were on the Bengals’ 29-yard line. On 1st-in-10, Dobbins ran the ball all 29-yards, leaping into the endzone for a touchdown. His drive put the Chargers over the top with a final score of 34-27.

“It was big,” Dobbins said of his touchdown in a post-game interview. “You know, I just want to thank Jesus. All the stuff I’ve been through, I just keep praying and keep working hard. And I’ve got these dudes with me,” he added, acknowledging his teammates.

Dobbins played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. He was traded to the Chargers for the 2024 season.

The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries throughout his football career. Since his senior year of high school, Dobbins has had six major leg injuries – including one just last year.

But he hasn’t let physical setbacks stop him. Dobbins had 11 carries for 56 yards against the Bengals. So far this season, he has racked up 726 yards – the ninth-most in the NFL – on 152 attempts, the most he’s ever had in a single NFL season. And he still has seven weeks of regular-season games to go.

However, there’s another aspect to Dobbins’ story that many of the millions who watched the Chargers-Bengals game don’t know.

Dobbins’ mom almost aborted him.

During a live broadcast between Ohio State and Michigan back in Dobbins’ college days, Sportscaster Gus Johnston retold the story of his birth:

J.K. Dobbins’ mom Mya became pregnant when she was 18-years old. She went to the doctor because she was thinking about aborting the baby but changed her mind. That baby turned out to be that young man, J.K. Dobbins, who she calls her “miracle baby.”

We thank the Lord for Mya’s courageous choice to keep her son. She could have chosen to abort J.K.; and the world would be much poorer without his talent, personality and Christian witness today.

Of course, a person’s worth does not depend on their talent. If J.K. had been born the world’s worst running back, it would have been just as courageous and good for Mya to refuse to abort him.

Still, stories like J.K. Dobbins’ remind us of the immense number of human lives, and great amount of human potential, lost to abortion. Since Roe v. Wade was handed down by the Supreme Court in 1973, more than 63 million preborn babies have been aborted in the U.S. alone. Think of how many lawyers, teachers, doctors, engineers, scientists, pastors, preachers and problem-solvers never got a chance at life because of abortion.

At Focus on the Family, we believe in every preborn baby’s inherent worth and dignity. We know that life begins at conception, and therefore, preborn babies have an unalienable right to life.

We work to see a day when abortion will, we pray, be considered unthinkable.

Please consider partnering with us to save lives from abortion. Our goal is to save one million babies by 2025. You’ll also find helpful resources including free counseling consultations, articles, and available help, below.
