Packers Quarterback Jordan Love: ‘God is First, I Am Second. It’s a Nice Little Daily Reminder’

The Green Bay Packers bested the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in the NFL Wild Card Round on Jan. 14, clinching a spot in the playoffs. Next up, the Packers face the 49ers on Jan. 20 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California in the Divisional round.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love served as the team’s back-up quarterback to starter Aaron Rogers for three years, before Love was elevated to the starting position for the 2023 season after Rogers moved to the New York Jets.

Love has faced his share of struggles and difficulties in life. The 25-year-old’s father, Orbin Jr., served as a police officer for the Bakersfield Police Department. Tragically, he committed suicide when Love was just 14.

Love considering quitting football but decided against it at his mother’s urging.

After a successful collegiate football career, Love was drafted by the Packers in 2020.

After taking over his role as starting quarterback for the Packers in 2023, Love sat down for an interview with NFL reporter Stacey Dales. She asked him about a bracelet he was wearing, which had the words, “I am second.”

“I am second, meaning God is first,” Love replied. “I am second is a nice daily reminder, to put others first, put God first, life’s not always about you, it’s a nice reminder to have.”

I Am Second – which designed and developed the bracelet – is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to helping Christians put Christ first in their lives. The organization has interviewed many influential Christians who have shared how they put Christ first, including the Robertson family, Nick Vujicic, Tony Dungy, Lecrae and others.

Love may no longer be second-string to Aaron Rogers, but reminding himself that he is still second to the One who knows and loves him, is a great reminder to us all.

How can you best put God first? Is there an area of your life that you haven’t yet surrendered to him? If so, ask the Lord to help you do so.

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:15-17, ESV).
