Men can now legally beat up women, so says USA Boxing, the national governing body that oversees amateur and Olympic competitions.
The new “Transgender Policy,” which went into effect on Monday, will permit males to compete against females if they 1. declare their new identity, 2. have “gender reassignment surgery” and 3. keep their testosterone levels below a certain threshold for 48 months.
In announcing the new guidelines, USA Boxing explained, “The purpose of this policy is to provide fairness and safety for all boxers.”
Yet sanctioning men to fight women is neither safe nor fair.
Regardless of mutilation surgeries or hormone levels, males have an overwhelming biological advantage when it comes to physical competitions like boxing. Whether bone density or sheer size, there’s a reason men and women haven’t historically squared off against each other in a boxing ring. In fact, a recent study found that men punch 163% harder than women.
Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the World Boxing Council, has recognized the disproportionate disparity between the sexes. In response to the pressure from radical activists to allow men to fight women, he’s made clear it won’t happen on his watch.
“In boxing, a man fighting a woman must never be accepted regardless of gender change,” he said. “There should be no gray area around this, and we want to go into it with transparency and the correct decisions. Woman to man or man to woman transgender change will never be allowed to fight a different gender by birth.”
Sadly, such level-headed and common-sense thinking isn’t guiding USA Boxing.
But here is the reality: No surgical procedure and no hormonal cocktail infusion will ever change a man to a woman. It’s a biological impossibility.
Whether women should be boxing at all is a fair and debatable matter. Self-defense is one thing, but deliberately hitting for sport is ripe for conversation. But Christians, especially, should be unanimous in their opposition to men hitting women for sport.
Ebanie Bridges is an Australian professional woman boxer. She was blunt in her opposition to the recent decision to let men fight women. We could use more candid commentary like this:
“This is wrong on so many levels,” Ms. Bridges wrote on social media. “I will never agree to this… it’s bad enough having ‘trans women’ breaking records in other sports like track and field, swimming and power lifting but it’s a bit different to [have] them breaking our skulls in combat sports where the aim is to hurt you not just break a record…however I think it’s wrong in all sport.”
It takes courage these days to be a public personality and speak out against the insane wisdom of the age. It brings to mind one of the many quotables from the world’s fictional boxing guru, Sylvester Stallone, a.k.a. Rocky Balboa.
Speaking to his son, Rocky warns, “You gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that!”
He concludes:
“It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
As Christians, we care about outcomes. We’re also focused on fighting the enemy with God’s truth and wisdom. Expressing biblical guidance may invite punches that may land, bruise and knock us down. But it’s only the cowards who stay down. Because we’re on His side, we can take the hits and keep going.
