On January 8, the non-profit journalism organization Project Veritas released a video of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey declaring that censorship on Twitter will be “much bigger” than only Donald Trump’s account.
Project Veritas received the video from a whistleblower inside Twitter who secretly recorded Dorsey in what seems to be a virtual staff meeting.
In the recording, Dorsey says, “We are focused on one account [@realDonaldTrump] right now, but this is going to be much bigger than just one account, and it’s going to go on for much longer than just this day, this week, and the next few weeks, and go on beyond the inauguration.”
“So, the focus is certainly on this account [@realDonaldTrump] and how it ties to real world violence. But also, we need to think much longer term around how these dynamics play out over time. I don’t believe this is going away anytime soon,” he adds.
The Daily Citizen reached out to Project Veritas and Twitter for a statement but did not receive a response.
In the hours after Project Veritas shared Dorsey’s recording on Twitter, the video had received over 2.6 million views.
In a lengthy Tweet thread on January 13, Dorsey attempted to explain Twitter’s decision to ban the president.
“I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter, or how we got here. After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter,” Dorsey wrote.
“I believe this was the right decision for Twitter. We faced an extraordinary and untenable circumstance, forcing us to focus all of our actions on public safety. Offline harm as a result of online speech is demonstrably real, and what drives our policy and enforcement above all,” he added.
Since banning the president on January 8, Twitter’s stock price has plummeted from $51.48 to $45.33, a drop of more than 11%.
