In a great victory for the pro-life movement, the number of abortions in Texas has fallen an astounding 97% following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe on June 24, 2022. According to new data from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, in July 2022 – the first full month following Roe’s reversal – only 68 abortions took place in the entire state of Texas.
In July 2021, there were 4,879 abortions in Texas, or around 150 per day.
“From September 2021 to June 2022, the Texas Heartbeat Act decreased the number of abortions to 2,500 per month on average,” Life News notes.
After Roe’s reversal, Texas’ Trigger Law went into effect, prohibiting all abortion in the state.
Life News notes that of the 68 abortions, one was done due to a medical emergency, while 67 others were performed for elective or social reasons. “It is likely that many of these 67 elective abortions were committed while a liberal Harris County judge attempted to block enforcement of pre-Roe laws,” the outlet states.

Texas Right to Life Legislative Associate Rebecca Parma said of the new data, “July’s data reveal the success of our pro-life laws. Legal elective abortion is no more in the state of Texas, and lives are being saved at unprecedented levels.”
“However, we must remain vigilant at all times. The abortion industry will seize every opportunity possible, legal or not, to continue waging war against preborn children,” she added.
The Lone Star State hasn’t just become a model for states seeking to protect preborn life. Texas has also made a significant investment in helping young mothers in need.
Last year, Texas allocated $100 million to help provide women with material assistance like car seats, clothing, diapers and formula as well as counseling, mentoring, employment readiness classes, and housing and support services through maternity homes.
Texas has demonstrated what it looks like to care for both preborn babies and young mothers. Hopefully an increasing number of states will continue to follow in Texas’ footsteps. And let’s pray that future reports will show that the number of abortions in Texas has fallen even lower: to zero.
