Tim Allen’s New Show ‘Shifting Gears’ Premieres on January 8, 2025

Conservative actor Tim Allen’s new comedy show Shifting Gears is set to premier on January 8, 2025, on ABC.

“The secret is out!” the 71-year-old shared in a Nov. 11 post on Facebook. “‘Shifting Gears’ with your new favorite father-daughter duo Tim Allen and Kat Dennings. January 8, 2025, on ABC and Stream on Hulu!”

According to a description of the show,

Matt, a headstrong widower, is the owner of a classic car workshop. When his separated daughter and teenage children arrive at his house, the real restoration begins.

ABC ordered a pilot season of Shifting Gears in March 2024 to evaluate demand for the new show, which Tim Allen is both starring in and executive producing.

Allen, a native of Denver, Colorado, has had a rocky relationship with ABC. In 2017, the network cancelled Last Man Standing (2011-2021) after its sixth season, sparking controversy over the reason.

The show, called “one of the only truly conservative outlets on television,” had a loyal fan base and 8.1 million viewers in its sixth season. This led many to believe ABC cancelled it because of its right-leaning political commentary.

But after outrage from its fans, the show was renewed for three additional seasons on Fox before concluding on May 20, 2021.

If Shifting Gears is anything like Last Man Standing – or Allen’s recent series The Santa Clauses on Disney+ – it’s an easy bet that Allen won’t keep his opinions to himself, and there will be a strong emphasis on the importance of the family.

As Allen was executive producing The Santa Clauses, Allen said it was a non-negotiable for him to keep Christ as the center of the Christmas holiday.

“It originally had a lot of otherworldly characters, and ghosts, and goblins. I said no, this is Christ-mas. Its Christ-mas. It literally is a religious holiday,” Allen told The Wrap at the time (emphasis in original).

“We don’t have to blow trumpets, but I do want you to acknowledge it. That’s what this is about. If you want to get into Santa Claus, you’re gonna have to go back to history, and it’s all about religion.”

Likewise, Allen reflected upon what he loved about Last Man Standing back in 2020:

We did the same thing as we did with Home Improvement. It’s all about the relationships – we don’t get into topical stuff. But [now], I’ve just got girls, so you see how a man differs in his perspective when he has so many strong women around him. We never make fun [of each other]. It’s an affectionate family. I like the fact that we honor and make fun – at the same time – marriage, institution, kids, babies, people. But in the same way, we honor it. We’re not being snarky about it.

Part of the reason for Allen’s success is that his shows have been built for a conservative audience, unlike most other shows and movies. Conservative families don’t like leftist values being streamed into their home from liberal enclaves – like Hollywood – hundreds of miles away.

Indeed, many recent “woke” movies have flopped at the box office, including Lightyear and Strange World – both of which lost the Walt Disney Co. north of $100 million.

It remains to be seen what values and lessons Shifting Gears will teach. But for many families starved for conservative entertainment, they may soon have a new favorite airing on ABC Wednesday nights.
