Election 2024: Five Issues Voters Care About Most

National polling shows citizens will prioritize five key issues at the polls this November: abortion, the border, climate change, the economy and LGBT policy. Here’s what you need to know — and articles to help you learn more.

Abortion

Voters strongly disagree over whether abortion should be legal, and to what extent. Abortion policy, sometimes labeled “healthcare” or “women’s rights”, will factor heavily into state and national elections this year. Voters in 10 states will decide whether to enshrine the “right” to abortion into their state constitutions. Several candidates — particularly those opposed to the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022 — have made abortion issues central to their campaigns.

The Border

Voters generally agree that America’s southern border isn’t as secure as it could be. They disagree over the scale of this security failure and how it effects Americans. Candidates offer different national solutions, some focusing on improving legal checkpoints, some on providing amnesty and citizenship for illegal immigrants and others on curbing illegal immigration. Voters also care about how much financial assistance national and state governments give illegal migrants, and how law enforcement cooperates with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to capture non-citizens committing crimes.

Climate Change

Many Americans view climate change as an existential threat the government must address. Others view climate change as a middling concern with dubious scientific backing. Opposing views on climate change often betray differing views of humanity’s presence on the planet. Those concerned over climate change argue overpopulation accelerates the problem because humans drain the Earth of resources. Others argue underpopulation, not overpopulation, is the true threat because human ingenuity produces benefits for the Earth and all its inhabitants.

The Economy

Like with the border, most voters agree the economy could be better, but disagree over how much better — and how it effects families. Candidates offer different plans for economic recovery, with different cuts and credits designed to increase purchasing power and decrease prices. Americans’ opinions on the efficacy of tariffs could also influence their votes come November.

LGBT Policy

LGBT policy refers to a range of positions influenced by gender and sexual orientation ideology, including redefining marriage in state constitutions; allowing men to play women’s sports; allowing men to use women’s locker rooms, bathrooms and sorority houses; incorporating gender ideology into school curriculum; incorporating sexual material into school libraries to be “inclusive”; allowing minors to undergo transgender medical interventions; and forcing taxpayers to fund transgender medical interventions.
