The Boise State Broncos had a great season with an overall 12-2 winning record. The team won its second straight Mountain West Conference and secured a bye week in the playoffs.
However, things didn’t go according to plan at the Fiesta Bowl, where the Broncos lost 31-14 against the Nittany Lions.
Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson, however, took the loss in stride, reflecting upon the hard work his team put in this year.
“I’m proud of our team, and I know there’s a legacy here for this group, Ashton, Ahmed [Hassanein], who won’t be wearing the blue and orange going forward, but there’s a legacy they left,” Danielson said.
It was Ahmed Hassanein’s final season with the Broncos. The 6’3” defensive end (#91) was born in Cairo, Egypt.
Hassanein racked up the accolades during his time at Boise State, including the following honors:
Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Finalist (2024)
College Football Network Honorable Mention All-America (2024)
2x All-Mountain West First Team (2023, 2024)
Phil Steele All-Mountain West Second Team (2024)
College Sports Communicators Second Team Academic All-America (2023)
2x College Sports Communicators Academic All-District (2022, 2023)
3x Academic All-Mountain West (Fall 2021, 2022. 2023)
2x Mountain West Scholar-Athlete (2021-22, 2022-23)
But Hassanein gained something much greater than awards during his time at Boise State – a relationship with Jesus Christ.
In a press conference after the Fiesta Bowl, Hassanein publicly thanked Coach Danielson for leading him to faith.
“First, I want to start off and say all glory to Jesus Christ. He’s the true champion,” Hassanein shared.
“Coach D,” he added, looking over to his coach, “You changed my life. You changed my life.”
You can watch the clip of Hassanein below:
Hassanein’s testimony witnesses to the power of Christian men and women who aren’t afraid of sharing their faith. Coach Danielson has repeatedly and publicly spoken of his faith, sharing the truth about Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Clearly, Hassanein was listening.
As the Apostle John wrote in 1 John 1:3-4,
“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” (ESV).
When we share the Gospel with others, we share the truth of Christ’s resurrection, and the transformation that He is working in our lives.
Congratulations to Coach Danielson and Ahmed Hassanein on a winning season. And we congratulate Hassanein on his newfound faith in Jesus Christ.
As Jesus taught, “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32, ESV). That’s something all of us sinners can be immensely grateful for.
