On Saturday, December 28, millions of Christians belonging to churches that follow a liturgical calendar celebrated the Feast of the Holy Innocents.
The day commemorates the lives of the young male babies slaughtered by King Herod in Bethlehem in his attempt to kill Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
On the feast day, the X account of St. John Cantius Church in Chicago reshared a video of their youth singing a hymn at the Illinois Capitol commemorating the Holy Innocents, and remembering all preborn babies lost to abortion.
You can watch the beautifully moving performance below:
The church’s youth joined forces with the Crusaders for Life – a “youth-led grassroots organization promoting the culture of life from conception to natural death.” The Crusaders first originated from a group of young parishioners at St. John Cantius parish, before expanding to other areas and states, LifeSiteNews reports.
The hymn, called the “Coventry Carol,” originated from “a medieval mystery play that depicts the massacre of the Holy Innocents by the soldiers of King Herod.”
The hymn is sung from a mother’s perspective, as a lament for her child’s death.
You can read its lyrics below:
Lully, lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
Bye, bye, lully, lullay.
Lullay, thou little tiny Child,
Bye, bye, lully, lullay.
O sisters too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we do sing
Bye, bye, lully, lullay.
Herod, the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his owne sight,
All young children to slay.
That woe is me, poor Child for Thee!
And ever mourn and sigh,
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
Bye, bye, lully, lullay.
According to the Charlotte Lozier institutes, there were a total of 56,457 abortion in Illinois in 2022 alone. That was an increase of 9% from the 51,797 abortions performed in 2021.
Abortion is indeed the greatest tragedy of our age, targeting helpless and innocent little ones for death and destruction.
As 2024 draws to a close, the pro-life movement has much to be thankful for. But there is also much more work to be done to save lives and rescue mothers from abortion. Please consider the following four ways you can get more involved in the pro-life movement in 2025:
Donate $60 to Option Ultrasound to provide a young mother with a clear picture of her preborn child, helping her choose life.
Volunteer at your local pregnancy resource center.
Listen to this episode of Focus on the Family with Jim Daly to learn more about the pro-life movement.
Read The Case for Life to become more educated on the life issue.
