Dad Confronts School Board for Allowing Boys in Girls Restrooms

Brandon Matthews castigated the Cabarrus County, North Carolina school board for allowing boys into girls restrooms and for not providing girls with a safe alternative.

He’s an example of a father doing what good fathers do – fighting to protect their children.

Matthews eight-year-old daughter stood alongside him as he addressed the board. She said allowing boys into the girls restroom was inappropriate.

At the contentious October 14 meeting, Matthews called the board “cowards” for not dealing with the issue appropriately and protecting girls. Instead of safeguarding the majority of students, the board was bowing to gender ideology and sexually confused children.

Video clips of the Matthews’ testimony have gathered thousands of views on the social media platform X. The parents’ rights group Moms for Liberty praised the father, saying,

We don’t need more cowards on school boards. We need strong men and women that will protect the safety and privacy of our children. Thank you Brandon Matthews for being a brave Dad in defense of kids.

Matthews told the board about one girl who “went to the bathroom and went to the office to try to have something done about it, and [school staff] said they couldn’t do it because of Title IX.”

New Department of Education Title IX rules, released in April 2024, redefined “sex” in the civil rights law to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.”

But Matthews argued, “Well there is something you can do, you can create policy that goes out to the girls that says they can use the staff bathroom.” He said schools in the district should then notify the girls of this policy change.

He then turned to his young daughter, standing next to him at the podium, and said, “Sweetheart, tell these people, do you want a little boy to watch you pee?”

She said, “No,” and he asked her, “Why?”

Matthews daughter replied, “Because it’s inappropriate.”

He turned back to the board and said, “It’s inappropriate. My eight-year-old daughter knows its inappropriate and yet y’all sit there silent.”

Matthews then repeated the epithet, saying, “You’re cowards.”

Cabarrus County sits just northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina, and is known as a high-performing district in the state.

It’s not the first time Matthews has outspokenly criticized the board. In a 2022 debate, he challenged the district over sexually explicit books in the school library.

John Green’s Looking for Alaska was a book named in the board discussion. The Charlotte NBC station, WCNC, reported, “Two board members read a sexual scene from the book during a work session, claiming Looking for Alaska is ‘filthy’ and should be banned.”

WCNC did not read the passage to television viewers, nor did the station publish the passage online.

Matthews criticized the inclusion of the book in the school’s library, saying, “This has got to be the stupidest thing ever. Make me understand why a kid needs to learn how to get oral sex?”

But Book Looks has a review of the book, listing a summary of concerns: “This book contains sexual nudity and sexual activities; moderate profanity use [95 incidents]; alcohol use; and gender ideologies.”

Given the seriousness of issues like privacy and safety for children and inappropriate materials in the classroom, Focus on the Family encourages parents to be very involved in their children’s education.

We appreciate dads like Brandon Matthews who stand up and fight to safeguard their own children – and all children in public schools.
