The Holy Spirit is perhaps the most misunderstood person in the Trinity. While some professing Christians attribute various types of bizarre behavior to the Spirit, others functionally neglect the Holy Spirit, living as though human wisdom and effort could produce what only He can truly accomplish. The following resources, curated by the Ligonier editorial team, seek to clarify from God’s Word who the Spirit is and what He does that we may rightly worship Him as God and fellowship with Him.
Who Is the Holy Spirit? by R.C. Sproul
In this booklet, Dr. Sproul cuts through the confusion about the Holy Spirit by going to Scripture. Topics addressed include who the Holy Spirit is and the work that He accomplishes, including giving new spiritual life to unbelievers and sanctifying and empowering God’s people.
The Holy Spirit: Contours of Christian Theology by Sinclair Ferguson
Dr. Ferguson notes that while the Holy Spirit’s work has been recognized, “the Spirit himself remains to many Christians an anonymous, faceless aspect of the divine being.” To correct this imbalance, this book delves into who the Spirit is as the eternal God of creation. Ferguson’s study is rooted in and driven by the scriptural story of the Spirit in creation and redemption and in the church’s historical theology.
The Holy Spirit by John Owen
John Owen is regarded as one of the greatest of the Puritan theologians. In this volume, he discusses the names, titles, divine nature, and personality of the Holy Spirit, including His work in the creation of the world. He also explores the work of the Spirit with respect to the human nature of Christ, the church, regeneration, and sanctification.
The Holy Spirit by Robert Letham
The Holy Spirit is God and is indivisible from the Father and the Son. In this book, Letham develops a holistic and canonical view of the Spirit in the context of the Trinity, the person and work of Christ, and redemption. It also includes a discussion of various controversies that have arisen in church history regarding the Holy Spirit and the Trinity.
The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit by B.B. Warfield
This book contains a collection of sermons, articles, and book reviews that Warfield—a renowned theologian and professor at Princeton Seminary in the late 1800s and early 1900s—wrote on the topic of the Holy Spirit. It includes biblical studies on the conviction of the Spirit, the Spirit’s testimony to our sonship, the Spirit’s help in our praying, and the Spirit’s work in both the Old and New Testaments.
