California Teacher Removes U.S. Flag, Encourages Class to Pledge Alliance to Gay Pride Flag

A California public high school English teacher lit up the internet recently by confessing, via videos posted on Twitter, that she had removed the U.S. flag from her classroom because she found it made her “uncomfortable.” When asked by her students where to face to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, she told them they could face the gay pride rainbow flag prominently displayed on her wall.

In one video, the teacher – Kristin Pitzen of Newport Mesa School District in Orange County – giggles as she recalls the response she gave to a student’s inquiry about the U.S. flag. “In the meantime,” she says (i.e., until she could “find” and return the U.S flag to her classroom), “I tell this kid, ‘We do have a flag in the class that you can pledge your allegiance to.’ And he looks around and goes, ‘Oh, that one?’” as she points the camera at a gay pride flag.

In a separate video from June, Ms. Pitzen displays the various “Pride Month” flags and symbols in her classroom, including her own rainbow-themed suspenders, earrings and eyeglasses.

“I pledge allegiance to the queers,” she says in the video.

When contacted by Fox News, the school district said they were looking into the situation.

“We are aware of this incident and are investigating. While we do not discuss employee related matters, we can tell you that showing respect and honor for our nation’s flag is a value that we instill in our students and an expectation of our employees. We take matters like this seriously and will be taking action to address it,” public relations officer for the district, Annette Franco, said.
