Pro-Trump protestors, who are angry about the Electoral College certification process, have breached the Capitol building, forcing Representatives and Senators to seek shelter within the building or try to escape. This is the first time the Capitol has been compromised in such a manner since the British burned the original building down in 1814.
Currently, there are still thousands of protestors swirling around the Capitol and several have managed to get inside the building, including entering the Senate and, reportedly, the House chamber as well.
Apparently, one individual in the Senate chamber declared, “Trump won.”
Shots have also been fired, and news reports indicate that one person has been taken to the hospital.
There is also a picture circulating of Capitol police and security with guns drawn trying to protect the House chamber.
Several elected officials on all sides have condemned the violence and the halting of the certification process, which has been successful for the time being.
President Donald Trump has tweeted, “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order—respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”
The president has also approved a request to mobilize the National Guard, and protestors have been cleared from the Senate chamber.
A curfew has been instituted in Washington D.C. at 6 p.m.
