Disney+ Accused of Hypocrisy After Firing ‘Mandalorian’ Actress Gina Carano for Comparing Conservative Censorship to Holocaust

Disney+, the streaming service created by the world’s largest entertainment empire, is accused of hypocrisy for dismissing “The Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano over a controversial TikTok video and Instagram post where she compared conservative censorship to the Holocaust.

According to reports, in the posts that have now been deleted, Carano wrote, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”

She has now been fired from her highly successful Star Wars spinoff show, “The Mandalorian.”

LucasFilms, which was founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas and is now owned by the Walt Disney Company, said, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

But as many commentators have pointed out, there is an obvious double standard at play.

Pedro Pascal, another “Mandalorian” actor, has a Twitter post comparing child survivors of medical experiments at Auschwitz-Birkenau to the supposed “children in cages” at the border. Ironically, internet sleuths have discovered that the picture of the children Pascal used in the post had nothing to do with the United States or U.S. Border Control—they were actually Palestinian children being held by Israeli authorities.

He has yet to face any disciplinary action for the Holocaust comparison and was recently announced as the star of the new HBO series “The Last of Us,” which is based on a video game. It has been described by Deadline as “one of the biggest TV castings of the year.”

The House of Mouse has also been maligned for ignoring the ongoing genocide against the Uyghur people in Xinjiang China, and instead publicly thanking Chinese Communist authorities for their tour of the region in the end credits of the panned live action “Mulan” film.

This also doesn’t include the numerous celebrities, newscasters and notable individuals who compared former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler—sometimes misspelling the dictator’s name as Adolph.

In a satirical post, The Daily Wire has created a video utilizing the iconic Disney intro with Cinderella’s castle, while changing the text below to say, “Double+ Standard.”

As a result of the controversy and the publicized hypocrisy, #CancelDisneyPlus has been trending, and it’s unclear if Disney will listen or respond to the criticism.

Though the vast majority of comparisons to the Holocaust are inaccurate, overwrought and should be avoided, the situation highlights how little education the general public has about the Holocaust.

According to a survey conducted by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, “63 percent of all national survey respondents do not know that six million Jews were murdered, and 36 percent thought that ‘two million or fewer Jews’ were killed during the Holocaust. Additionally, although there were more than 40,000 camps and ghettos in Europe during the Holocaust, 48 percent of national survey respondents cannot name a single one.”

This lack of education has resulted in the proliferation of Nazi and Holocaust comparisons, which are not only bad history but serve as a way to minimize the deaths of six million Jewish people.

Noam Blum, the associate editor of Table Magazine, summed up the situation well on Twitter, “Gina Carano made a dumb Holocaust analogy (a national pastime these days) but calling it anti-Semitic reeks of the same annoying edginess that inspires dumb Holocaust comparisons to begin with. Stop reaching for the worst thing you can think of to bolster your arguments.”
