Pro-Life Organization Charges Google with Banning its Abortion Pill Reversal Ads

The pro-life organization, Live Action, and its president, Lila Rose, have accused Google of banning its internet ads that inform women of the possibility of reversing the abortion pill process. On September 13, Google “disapproved” all of Live Action’s abortion pill reversal ads, which had previously been approved and had been running since May, asserting the ads made “unreliable claims.” It also banned Live Action’s animated video called “Baby Olivia” showing human development in the womb.

The cause of Google’s latest act of censorship appears to be an article published on September 14 by the left-leaning media outlet, The Daily Beast, which criticized both Live Action’s ad campaign and the abortion pill reversal process in general. The article claimed the reversal process is “an unproven, potentially dangerous intervention that has never been approved by the FDA. The only independent study on it was halted after a quarter of the participants were hospitalized.”

The Daily Beast claims that its report prompted Google to pull the Live Action ads.

“A Google spokesperson said the company does not allow ads that promote harmful health claims, including those for abortion pill reversal,” The Daily Beast article states. “After reviewing a copy of the report provided by The Daily Beast, Google said it had removed all of the ads mentioned.”

But as The Daily Citizen has previously reported, the abortion pill reversal protocol simply involves giving a woman who has taken the first abortion pill – it’s a two-pill process – progesterone, a pregnancy hormone that helps a baby grow and thrive.

“Progesterone, which is often called the pregnancy hormone, is used by physicians to help women maintain their pregnancies if the women are in danger of having a miscarriage,” we reported in May 2020. “The risk to women and their health is minimal, as the main side effects are a little dizziness and heartburn. As a result of its effectiveness, progesterone has been used for more than 50 years to help women continue their pregnancies and is FDA approved. It causes no adverse defects for the babies either. The preterm birth rate for women is also lower.

“So, if progesterone is so safe and FDA approved, why do pro-abortion activists fight against sharing this information with women? Even Dr. Havey Kliman, of Yale’s School of Medicine, said in an interview with The New York Times that the basic medical foundation of the protocol ‘makes biological sense.’ He even said that he would give his own daughter progesterone if she accidentally took mifepristone while pregnant. But abortion activists and even some physicians still fight against its use or even acknowledge the possibility of its effectiveness.”

Live Action reports that between 39% and 41% of all abortions are now done using the abortion pill method.

But what about The Daily Beast’s claim that a quarter of participants in an abortion reversal study ended up in the hospital?

It turns out that only one woman that received progesterone ended up in the hospital, according to Dr. Christian Francis, Chair of the Board at the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians ad Gynecologists, who talked with Live Action about the study’s results. Two other women who received placebos also had to have emergency surgery. And according to the researchers involved, the hemorrhaging they experienced was likely caused by the mifepristone abortion pill itself, not the progesterone.

Progesterone, on the other hand, can be safely used to prevent miscarriages, according to a 2020 study.

Even though it has banned Live Action’s ads, Google continues to allow ads for the abortion pill, which according to Live Action, has resulted in 1,042 women sent to the hospital, 599 women who needed blood transfusions, and 24 deaths.

Several pro-life members of the U.S. Senate have weighed in on the Live Action controversy by writing a letter to Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, demanding an explanation for Google’s censorship of the ads.

“We are deeply concerned by Google’s decision to ban Live Action’s pro-life ads promoting Heartbeat International’s Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) hotline,” the senators wrote. “Google’s pro-life censorship is out of step with the science and reflects an unacceptable bias against pro-life views. We insist that you immediately reverse this decision.”

The letter requests Google to explain who it talked to about the Live Action ads, including any doctors or scientists, and pointedly inquires whether Google will also remove ads for the deadly abortion pill mifepristone.

The Daily Citizen contacted Google for an explanation of the reasons for the banning of Live Action’s ads but has not received a response as we go to press.

Women need accurate information about abortion and life-saving alternatives, but Google, The Daily Beast, and the abortion industry appear bent on preventing that from happening.
