The White House’s $6 trillion proposed budget includes language straight out of transgender ideology. Instead of describing women who bear children as “mothers” or “birth mothers,” the proposed “Budget Of The U.S. Government, Fiscal Year 2022” uses the phrase “birthing people.”
The language is part of an ongoing drive from gender ideologues to erase male-female distinctions. After all, if a woman “transitions” to live as the opposite sex, then it’s a “man” who gives birth, right?
No. Language like “birthing people” denigrates and insults women, who are uniquely created and gifted by God to harbor a growing life in their bodies and give birth.
The proposed spending includes “a historic investment to improve maternal health and mortality.” Just as an aside, words like “maternal” and “maternity” come to us from Latin via French, and derive from the root “mater,” which means “mother.” Not “person” or “people” or “man” or “father.” There’s really no way of getting around the fact that women have babies – not men or “birthing people.”
And, as another aside, the word “historic” is used 20 times in the pages of the document that describe the $6 trillion budget, as recommended government spending is described in terms such as “historic investments,” “historic agenda or “historic plans.”
The proposal initially uses sex-specific terms like “maternal,” “maternity,” “other women of color,” and even “obstetrics” (the branch of medicine and surgery concerned with childbirth and the care of women giving birth). It reads:
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations, with an unacceptably high mortality rate for Black, American Indian/ Alaska Native, and other women of color. To help end this high rate of maternal mortality and race-based disparities in outcomes among birthing people …
It’s all part of the broader push to change language and erase the differences between men and women.
Remember all the news about the first so-called “pregnant man” back in 2008? Media outlets, such as the Oprah Winfrey Show, People magazine, The View and he CBS Early Morning Show – were all aflutter over Thomas Beatie, born female but identifying as a man, who was impregnated via IVF and gave birth. For the establishment media, this “proved” that men could give birth, too. Beatie told Oprah, “Different is normal and love makes a family.”
In 2016, we were all introduced to the term “chestfeeding,” as Time and People magazines pictured bearded, hairy transgender-identified Evan Hempel “chestfeeding” Hempel’s newborn child. Hempel, as required in order to give birth, was born biologically female, but now lives as a man.
Not long after this, La Leche League Canada and La Leche League USA proudly announced:
Chestfeeding is a term used by many transmasculine and non-binary parents to describe how they feed and nurture their children from their bodies. Some prefer the term nursing instead, while others prefer breastfeeding. We use all of these words, and our volunteer Leaders warmly accept whatever term a family chooses for their own experiences.
“Transmasculine” refers to women who identify as men and “non-binary” refers to those who don’t identify as either of the two sexes. The group said its language was rooted in a type of “science,” arguing:
The science behind the use of the term chestfeeding is not focused on human anatomy; it is the science of health communication, which requires using terms that are familiar and accepted by those being helped. Language is always evolving, in the breastfeeding and lactation world as elsewhere.
In 2020, J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, responded to an article about international relief work entitled, “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.” In a tweet, Rowling pointed out the obvious, only women menstruate. She wrote, “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
The examples of language twisting go on and on. The American Cancer Society’s 2020 guidelines for cervical cancer screening recommend that “individuals with a cervix initiate cervical cancer screening at age 25 years.” I think they’re talking about females. And British health-care workers are now encouraged to use inclusive terms like “human milk,” “co-parent” and “birthing parent” – as opposed to truthful language like mother’s milk, mothers and fathers, and birth mother.
Educators are getting into the act, too. For example, a private school in Manhattan issued a12-page guide where students and staff were told that instead of using the terms “Mom and Dad,” “we say grownups, folks or family.” The guide also encourages students to use “gender inclusive language” which will “provide critical affirmation to students across the gender spectrum.”
How do Christians stand against this rampant debasement of language in the media, government, medical professions, and education? Rod Dreher writes in his newest book Live Not By Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, explaining the “soft totalitarianism” of “political correctness” – where folks who speak the truth about these issues are subject to harassment and bullying, shutdowns on social media, loss of jobs and destruction of their businesses.
Referencing a 1974 essay by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Dreher writes, “The ordinary man may not be able to overturn the kingdom of lies, but he can at least say that he is not going to be its loyal subject.”
Instead, we must live in truth, and “not say, write, affirm, or distribute anything that distorts the truth” and “not take part in a meeting in which the discussion is forced and no one can speak the truth” – such as contemporary “diversity trainings” that squash all aberrant thoughts and opinions. We must not “support journalism that ‘distorts or hides the underlying facts’” and “walk out of an event “as soon as he hears the speaker utter a lie, ideological drivel, or shameless propaganda.’”
In addition, Christians must speak the truth and teach our children the truth – courageously, wisely and kindly. Only women can bear and birth children. A boy cannot become a girl. There are two sexes, not a multitude of “genders.” God designed marriage to be a covenant, exclusive, life-long relationship between a husband and wife – not between two people of the same sex or two people with amorphous, non-binary “genders.”
This cultural tsunami of gender ideology will not be defeated overnight – and it’s certainly not the only dogma where lies and propaganda are promulgated. But as Christians living our everyday lives, we can choose to live in the truth – not by lies.
