“Average Cop” Single-Handedly Lifts Car Off Woman to Save Her Life

Gloucester County, Virginia Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Holt is being hailed as a hero for coming to the rescue of a mother pinned under an overturned automobile.

According to a statement released from the sheriff’s office, a child was inside the car, and the driver’s head was pinned under the sunroof.

“Seeing the trauma the child was witnessing, Deputy J. Holt went into overdrive.”

Body camera footage captured the drama, including Officer Holt’s extraordinary feat of strength. Wedging his shoulder into the door frame, he successfully power lifted the car off the injured woman.

“I’m just an average cop and you know, it’s what we do,” Holt told reporters. “And thinking of doing anything different is you know, out of the question.”

Of course, there’s no such thing as an “average” police officer – if by “average” he means a value midway between the two extremes of ordinary and extraordinary. Law enforcement officers regularly risk their lives, courageously and bravely running into situations that most people run away from.

In my book, there’s no such thing as an “average” cop. They represent the very best of our communities. I recognize there are some who violate the badge and their oath – but they are in the majority, and by a lot.

“Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm,” once wrote the Latin writer, Publilius Syrus.

It takes a police officer to navigate the choppy waters – including horrific roadside accidents that most of us shy away from.

If it weren’t for Officer Holt, a little girl would have tragically lost her mom earlier this month – and witnessed her death firsthand.

Law enforcement are in the spotlight these days, operating under incredible pressure. One wrong move and they can call it a career – or maybe it will cost them their life.

We need to spend time celebrating the good, shining the bright light on America’s best.

Mainstream media regularly runs videos of the rare rogue cop who crosses a line, but how often do you see images of the rest of law enforcement represnetatives racing into danger – or heroically saving a mother’s life?

But how is it even possible for one man to lift a car weighing several thousand pounds?

Scientists call it “hysterical strength” – an extreme display of brawn that extends well beyond normal levels. It was once believed that surges in adrenaline accounted for these superhuman outbursts of force, but that conventional wisdom is now being challenged.

Instead, neurologists and physiologists now suggest that most people are actually stronger than they think and that we only tap those reserves when put under extreme pressure.

As culture literally deteriorates before our eyes, Christians are increasingly being put in positions demanding extraordinary strength and courage.

Do you feel the pressure to cave or compromise biblical beliefs? Are you growing weary of feeling out of place or under pressure for believing things the world openly mocks?

It’s time to summon strength you never knew you even had, strength, ultimately, from God’s spirit in you. It’s there. It’s real. You have convictions deeply rooted in eternal truths that will help you rise to the occasion.

Keep in mind the Apostle Paul was writing from jail when he wrote, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (4:13).

Three cheers for Sheriff Jon Holt – and may his heroic act remind us all that with Jesus Christ in our lives, we can do more than we and the rest of the world thinks we can do.
